Purity Culture In Black America

Feb 14, 2021 | Religious Trauma, Secular Sexuality

The first joke I actually remember my dad teaching me was, fittingly enough, hyper-sexual, racist and way over my head. The punch line made no sense to me, not just because I couldn’t conceive of how someone could eat a bowling ball, but also because I didn’t understand what set black women apart as deserving of judgement. A quarter century later and I’m still not sure I get it but I see the evidence of it everywhere and this week, with the help of Jena Miyu and Vi La Bianca, we’re looking to point out the obvious- like most things in life, the purity culture SecX was built to supplant doubles down on woc. Join us as we take an accounting of the extra challenges of the jezebel stereotype and tackle purity culture within Black America, plus your calls! Catch the episode live 2/18 7p and be sure to check back afterwards for some footNOTES!
